6 Classic Stax Tunes!

6 Things For Today, Art, Blues, Covers, History, Music, Record Labels, Soul

Founded in 1957 by Jim Stewart and Estelle Axton, Stax Records (formerly Satellite Records) was a major contributor in the foundation of Southern and Memphis Soul, as well a promoter of Gospel, Funk, Jazz, and Blues music. Stax backed and released the records of now cherished artists such as Otis Redding, Wendy Rene, Booker T & the M.G.’s, and Isaac Hayes. Perhaps overlooked in the popular consciousness of younger generations looking back (due to Motown’s dominance) Stax was a powerhouse in its own right, and brought some of the slickest, soulful, funky, and smooth records to the masses.

Wendy Rene – After Laughter Comes TearsĀ

Carla Thomas – I’ll Never Stop Loving You

Booker T & the M.G.’s – Green Onions

Otis Redding – These Arms Of Mine

Isaac Hayes – Walk On By ( Awesome, experimental 12 minute take on Dionne Warwicks hit)

Johnnie Taylor – I Had A DreamĀ
